“The Fun and Fury” – Learn how to make ceramic figurines with Jemma Gowland

What you will learn:
- Sculpting a small figure on an armature. This workshop concentrates on the figure and the stance, using body language to tell the story.
- Learn Jemma’s method for creating a ceramic figure, concentrating on observational skills, ways of ensuring the proportions are correct, and altering the stance to create a narrative.
- There will be a background introduction to explain Jemma’s work, with slides, leading on to a demonstration which will be broken down into stages allowing participants to follow and create their own.
- Help will be given throughout the day, with additional technical information for firing and finishing.
About Jemma
Jemma is known for her distinctive, expressive and detailed porcelain figures. Her work explores upbringing and attitude. She is using cast doll faces, fired dressmaker’s pins and mixed media. The figures show the girls dressed for display, as a plaything, entertainment or ornament. Looks and behaviour are already prescribed.
Jemma first trained for a BSc in Engineering Product Design, and worked in the fields of industrial design, production, and architectural model making before becoming a teacher of Design and Technology. With experience in making using a broad range of materials, for a wide range of purposes, ceramics has become the abiding interest with it’s unique versatility and surface possibilities, the technical challenges and opportunities seem endless.
Being a mother, wife and daughter, as well as a woman often working in a largely male field, has led to an examination of the role of the female, and how societal norms can still shape the way children are raised.
Jemma exhibits her work at top ceramics events, including Collect and Ceramic Art London. She is also represented by major UK galleries.

Workshop details
- This workshop is aimed at intermediate students who already have some experience in working with clay
- All tools and materials will be provided, however you are welcome to bring your own tools and aprons
- We have tea and coffee facilities and there will be home made muffins to keep you going!
- There will be 1 hour lunch break around 1pm. We are based in Hackney Downs Studios and there’s a selection of independent cafes, bakery and deli.
- If you’d like your workshop pieces bisque fired, there will be a small fee (£3 per 500g)
